Merritt Spangler is a multidisciplinary artist.
Driven by an insatiable need for a life filled with adventure, Spangler prioritizes immersion in world culture over mere invention within the confines of the studio. Her practice uses art as a platform for questioning authority and is often rich in allegory, with recurring themes of love, death, and the complexity of human psychology. When she is in the studio, she believes she produces some of her strongest work late into the evenings while listening to Led Zeppelin.
She has participated in international residencies including Joya AIR (Spain) and PADA Studios (Portugal), and will attend Vermont Studio Center in 2026 and Piramidón (Spain) in 2027. In 2023, she participated in the correspondence course for painters at Turps Art School in London.
Spangler has exhibited across the U.S. and Europe, with her solo exhibition Reckless Abandon debuting in 2024 at Shit Art Club in Los Angeles, and recent group shows at Site:Brooklyn Gallery (curated by Alina Cohen), BELHAUS (Phoenix), Visionary Projects (New York City) and Artnueve Gallery (Spain). In 2022, her work was selected by Delphian Gallery for the FAIR ART FAIR auction in London. Her work is held in private collections internationally, including in Saudi Arabia and Germany.
Characteristically spontaneous in appearance, her work embraces mistakes and accidental marks as a way of engaging with imperfection. Favoring obscurity over clarity, she cultivates a body of work that reflects the ambiguities and contradictions of perception. She and her work have been featured in Plastikcomb Magazine, Floorr Magazine, Outside Magazine, All SHE Makes, Friend of the Artist, and Palette Talk.
In alignment with her lifelong commitment to fostering peace and creative expression, and when she is not in the studio, she serves as the Founder & Director of Reizck Project. Spangler values local community over the individualized visibility incentivized by the internet. She carried this belief into 2026 when she was invited to participate in the peacebuilding academy at the Kroc Institute, a leading center for the study of violent conflict and strategies for peace. Raised in the American South, she earned a BA in Psychology from Syracuse University and an MA in International Relations from American University, where her research explored the role of art in conflict prevention.
She can often be found immersed in the works of philosophers such as Albert Camus, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Carl Jung; poets like Nizar Qabbani and Czesław Miłosz; and writers such as Leo Tolstoy. She often sees parts of herself reflected in the writings and artistic practices of women like Anaïs Nin and Yoko Ono.
